How Long Does a Luxury Home Renovation Take in Utah?

Written by Chuck Marshall | May. 19, 2025

If you’re planning a luxury home renovation, one of the first questions on your mind is probably, “How long is this going to take?”

And that’s a smart question to ask—because knowing the timeline upfront helps you plan your life around the project with less stress and more confidence.

How Long Does a Luxury Home Renovation Take in Utah?

For most high-end renovations, the process—from early design conversations to final construction—takes about 6 to 9 months.

Of course, the exact timeline depends on your project’s scope, level of customization, and how quickly key decisions are made.

At Marshall Homes, we’ve built a clear five-step process that keeps your Utah home renovation organized, on track, and tailored to your goals. Let’s walk through what that timeline really looks like, step by step.

Step 1: The Initial Consultation
Step 2: Concept Design
Step 3: Preliminary Building Service
Step 4: Construction
Step 5: Post-Construction Support

Step 1: The Initial Consultation

Every great renovation starts with a conversation. During this first call—typically scheduled through our website—we’ll talk through your goals, your home, and the scope of your project.

This is where we determine if your project is a good fit for our process. If it is, we’ll walk you through what’s next and invite you into our Concept Design Service.

If we decide together that we might not be a good fit for your project, we’ll still make sure you leave with something valuable. That might be a general idea of what your project could cost, or even a referral to another builder we trust.

Either way, the goal is simple: give you clarity before any big decisions are made.

Step 2: Concept Design (2–6 Weeks)

Once we’ve confirmed your project is a good fit, we move into the Concept Design phase—this is where your ideas start taking shape. Over the next few weeks, we’ll work closely with you to develop a space plan tailored to your home, your lifestyle, and the look you’re going for.

You’ll get a realistic, transparent budget so you can see where your investment is going, and we’ll show you a draft construction schedule to help you understand the overall timeline.

There’s room to tweak and refine as we go—we’ll help you strike the right balance between design, function, and cost.

By the end of this phase, you’ll have the confidence that your luxury home renovation is not only possible, but planned with precision. It’s the foundation that makes everything else run smoothly.

Step 3: Preliminary Building Service (4–8 Weeks)

This is where we shift from vision to execution. With your concept and budget in place, we begin locking in the details so everything is ready for construction.

You’ll meet with our in-house interior designer to finalize finishes, colors, and product selections—so when it’s time to build, there’s no guesswork.

We’ll also complete detailed construction drawings, including any necessary structural and foundation engineering. This allows us to engage our specialist contractors early, eliminate vague allowances, and optimize pricing before we break ground.

Permitting? We handle that too!

Our team handles the entire approval process with your local municipality, saving you time and stress. Before this phase wraps, you’ll receive a full construction schedule so you know exactly how your luxury renovation will unfold, right down to the day your home is handed back to you.

Step 4: Construction (3–6 Months)

Now it’s time to bring everything to life! For most luxury home renovations, construction takes 3 to 6 months, depending on the size and complexity of your project.

Before we begin, we’ll walk you through your Customer Handbook, which outlines exactly what to expect at each stage of the build.

Throughout the process, you’ll have full access to your online client portal, where you can view your schedule, track progress, make payments, and keep all communication in one place.

You’ll also have scheduled jobsite walkthroughs with your dedicated Project Manager—typically during electrical layout, structural checks before insulation, and again at the final walkthrough.

We’re not just building beautiful spaces—we’re making sure you feel informed and supported every step of the way.

Step 5: Post-Construction Support (12 Months)

Just because the renovation is done doesn’t mean our relationship is. Once your project is complete, you’ll receive a full warranty and ongoing support for the next 12 months.

Whether it’s a question about how something works, a small adjustment you’d like us to take a look at, or just peace of mind knowing someone’s still there, we’ve got you.

Our team stays in touch to make sure your newly renovated home continues to meet your expectations long after the last tool is packed up.

What Can Delay a Luxury Renovation

Even with the best planning and the best team, renovations can sometimes hit a few bumps.

At Marshall Homes, we do everything we can to prevent delays, but it helps when homeowners know what to expect and how to help keep things moving.

Here are a few of the most common holdups in Utah home remodeling, and how you can stay ahead of them:

Permit Delays

Some cities or counties take longer than others to approve permits. We handle the application process for you, but submitting plans promptly and avoiding major changes after submission can help speed things up.

Material Availability

Certain materials—especially high-end or custom items—can have longer lead times. We’ll help you select materials early in the process to avoid backorders and shipping issues.

Change Orders During Construction

Changing plans after construction starts can cause delays and increase costs. That’s why our Preliminary Building phase is so important—it gives you time to make solid decisions with confidence.

Undiscovered Conditions

In older homes, we occasionally uncover structural or mechanical issues behind the walls. While we can’t predict everything, we’ll flag potential risks early and keep you informed if anything unexpected comes up.

How You Can Help Keep the Project on Track

Even the most experienced builder can’t do it all alone. One of the best parts of working with homeowners who care about quality is that they’re just as invested in the outcome as we are.

If you’re getting ready for a luxury home renovation, here are a few ways you can help keep things moving smoothly.

Make Decisions Early

Changes during construction are one of the most common causes of delays. By making design choices and material selections during the planning phase, you’ll avoid long lead times, rushed decisions, and schedule slowdowns.

We’ll guide you through everything upfront—no surprises, no scrambling.

Respond Promptly to Approvals

There are a few key moments in every project where we need your sign-off to move forward. Staying responsive when those moments come up helps us avoid schedule gaps and keeps your luxury remodel on track. We’ll make it easy for you by flagging what’s urgent and what can wait.

Trust the Process

Our five-step system is built on years of experience in high-end home remodels across Utah.

Each phase has a purpose—whether it’s to prevent delays, avoid budget creep, or reduce stress. Trusting the process allows us to do what we do best while keeping your project on time, on budget, and built exactly the way you imagined.
